Volleyball Sweeps Concordia Wisconsin and Concordia Chicago in Straight Sets

Amanda Affolter posted six kills in consecutive games and hit at a combined .320 clip in leading the Concordia University Texas volleyball team to a pair of victories on Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Concordia Invitational. The host Tornados swept Concordia Wisconsin, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-8), before blanking Concordia Chicago 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-23) to close out play at the two-day tournament.

Against Concordia Wisconsin, Affolter posted six kills against two errors on 12 attempts while also posting two service aces to pace the Tornados. Samantha Ladewig and Bianca Martinez added 14 and 10 assists, respectively, while Jordan Grosse contributed a career-best 10 digs. Heather Leyva finished with four kills and three blocks.

Concordia Wisconsin (0-2) was led by Carley Valentine's double-double performance of 19 assists and 10 digs. Lauren Gonring had 11 digs, while Amanda Stahmann had seven kills.

Concordia Texas (2-1) had to come through in clutch situations to sweep Concordia Chicago later in the day, as the three sets featured 24 tied and 13 lead changes. Shelbi Chipman and Affolter had six kills apiece, while Affolter also had four digs and three blocks. Taylor Mastin, Ladewig and Martinez all had at least eight helpers, and Ladewig recorded five aces.

Concordia Chicago (1-2) got strong contributions from Claire Mackey, Jenna Boggs and Maryl Pinotti. Mackey had a game-high 13 kills to go along with five digs, and Boggs posted 14 assists. Pinotti added 11 digs and three helpers.

The Tornados will look to continue its winning streak at the Austin College Tournament next weekend, which begins with a 1 p.m. match against Rhodes on Friday, Sept. 7.
