BOX SCORE
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Concordia University Texas volleyball team nearly rallied from a two-set deficit, but No. 21 Trinity outlasted the Tornados in five frames by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 15-9 on Wednesday night at Sams Gymnasium.
Concordia Texas (6-13) came up just short of the upset after the Tigers (19-3) used the strength of a 14-4 run to pull away in the deciding panel.
Alissa Johnson led the Tornados with 11 kills, while Sam Ladewig handed out a match-high 21 assists.
Meanwhile, Maggie Emodi (18 kills/18 digs), Layne Hubbard (13 kills/23 digs) and Maryn Swierc (16 assists/10 digs) all registered double-doubles to lead Trinity to its 10 consecutive match.
After the Tigers won the first two sets, Concordia Texas claimed the third and fourth frames to force the non-conference match to go the distance.
In the final panel, the Tornados, who fell behind 3-0, reeled off a 5-2 run to pull even. However, Trinity netted six of the next seven tallies to take control of the set. Concordia racked up back-to-back points to pull within three, but the Tigers claimed four of the final five tallies to close out the contest.
The Tornados will return home to host Mary Hardin-Baylor and Sul Ross State on Saturday. Concordia will take on the Cru at 11 a.m. and the Lady Lobos at 3 p.m.
