RICHARDSON, Texas – The sixth-seeded Concordia University Texas volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to No. 3 seed East Texas Baptist to open the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the UTD Activity Center. The Tigers won the match by scores of 25-11, 25-9, 14-25 and 25-19.
Concordia Texas (12-20), which made its first appearance at the league's postseason tournament in 13 years, was unable to pull off a come-from-behind victory. The Tornados dropped the first two frames before netting an 11-point win in the set four. CTX used the momentum to take a 13-8 lead in the final panel, but East Texas Baptist (28-8) rallied to claim seven consecutive tallies and win by six points.
The Tornados were limited on the attack to a .031 hitting percentage after committing 35 errors.
Sophomore Katie Baker and senior Emma Clifford each registered 10 kills apiece, while sophomore Zoë Allen handed out 20 assists. Clifford hit a team-high .500 on 16 swings with only two errors.
Meanwhile, the Tigers hit at a .257 clip en route to their third victory over Concordia this fall. Kassie Freitag racked up 10 winners, while Adaeze Elonu hit a match-high .529 with nine terminations in 17 errorless attacks. Kayla Taylor ran point for the offense with a match-best 22 assists.
East Texas Baptist advances to play No. 2 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5 p.m., while the Tornados will play an elimination match at 12 p.m. on Friday. Concordia's opponent is not yet known, however, CTX could match up with No. 1 Texas-Dallas, fourth-seeded Hardin-Simmons or No. 5 Texas-Tyler.
