Abilene, Texas –
Justin Gonzalez won the triple jump and placed second in the high jump to lead the Concordia University Texas men's track & field team at the American Southwest Conference Championships on Friday, Apr. 26 at the HSU Track & Field Complex. The Tornados, who have never finished higher than fifth at the competition, stand in second place among five schools with 57 points after six events.
Concordia racked up a league-best 18 points in each of the two jumping events during the afternoon. Gonzalez was victorious in the triple jump by recording a school-record leap of 45-feet, 3.50-inches before finishing second in the high jump behind teammate
Matthew Denman by clearing 5-10. Like Gonzalez, Denman accumulated 18 points for the Tornados after winning the high jump by clearing six feet, placing third in the triple jump with a mark of 43-6 and finishing fifth in the javelin throw with a toss that sailed 164-1.
Other notable performances were made by
Zach Domingues,
Michael Normand and
Brian Stefanoff. Domingues was third in the hammer throw with a school-record mark of 138-6, while Stefanoff placed fourth in the javelin throw by throwing the spear 166-2. Normand completed the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a fourth-place time of 10:49.96.
Concordia will finish competing at the championship meet tomorrow morning.
Notes: The Concordia University Texas men's track & field program is well on its way to posting its best team performance in school history at the ASC Championships … The program, which is only in its fourth year of varsity competition, has never finished higher than fifth or accumulated more than 58 points at the league's championship meet … The Tornados have already racked up 57 points with 15 events remaining in the competition.
