AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas volleyball team will open its 2013 campaign on Friday at the Bulldog Classic in Seguin. The Tornados will play four matches, including one exhibition, in the two-day tournament.
Concordia Texas will begin classic play against St. Joseph's-Long Island at 11 a.m. before taking on former American Southwest Conference (ASC) foe and host Texas Lutheran at 3 p.m. The Tornados will match up with Houston Community College in an exhibition match at 9 a.m. the following day and conclude the weekend against Texas-Tyler at 3 p.m.
Concordia Texas returns 10 letter winners and welcomes six newcomers to first-year head coach Christy Clawson-Diver's squad. Seniors
Alissa Johnson and
Alison Pringle and junior
Stacy Manship all return after garnering honorable-mention All-ASC honors last year.
The Lady Eagles finished the 2012 season with a 19-7 overall mark and tied for third with a 6-3 record in the Skyline Conference. St. Joseph's-Long Island won six of its final eight matches to finish up last year, which ended with a sweep at the hands of Mount Saint Mary's in the semifinals of the Skyline Tournament.
The Bulldogs concluded their membership with the ASC and moved on to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in July. Texas Lutheran wrapped up its final season in the league with a 15-13 overall record (12-4 ASC West).
The Patriots were picked to finish fifth in the preseason ASC poll, one spot ahead of the Tornados, earlier this month. Texas-Tyler registered a 7-11 overall mark (5-11 ASC East) a year ago.
The Bulldogs are 59-6 all-time record against Concordia in a series that dates back to the 1980 season. The Tornados' last victory over Texas Lutheran came on Sept. 11, 1992.
Meanwhile, the Patriots own an 8-5 all-time record versus Concordia in a series that started in 2003. However, the Tornados have won three of the last four meetings, including a sweep on Sept. 22, 2012.
Concordia and St. Joseph's-Long Island have never met.
