SEGUIN, Texas – Texas-Tyler rolled past Concordia University Texas by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-11 in a non-conference match at the Bulldog Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Tornados (2-1) were limited to a .153 hitting percentage and had only one lead in the entire match.
The Patriots (2-1) hit at a .409 clip, including .520 in the final set, to hand Concordia Texas its first loss of the campaign. Breanna Brummett posted a match-high 13 kills, while Rebecca Floyd guided the Texas-Tyler offense with 33 assists.
Meanwhile, Sam Ladewig and Zoë Allen split time running point for the Tornados offense, registering 14 and 13 helpers, respectively.
The Patriots won three of the first four points of the match and never looked back in the opening frame. Concordia won three of the next five tallies, but Texas-Tyler used a 5-1 spurt to take control of the panel. The Tornados staved off a pair of set points before Floyd led Brummett to a winner that clinched the six-point win.
Concordia held a brief 2-1 advantage in the second frame, but the Patriots answered back to pull even. After the two teams exchanged the following six points, Texas-Tyler ripped off an 8-1 run to gain the advantage. The Tornados again had a late burst which cut the deficit to five (24-19), but an attack error gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead in the contest.
Texas-Tyler registered a .520 hitting percentage in the final set to close out the match.
The Patriots raced out to a 14-3 advantage behind the strength of seven kills. Concordia was unable to make up any ground and Texas-Tyler cruised to a 14-point win in the final panel.
The Tornados will return to action on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Austin College Classic in Sherman.
