Tornados split conference-opening matches on Saturday

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas volleyball team split a pair of American Southwest Conference matches on Saturday at Concordia Fieldhouse.

The Tornados (4-7) swept Sul Ross State in the opening contest and fell to rival Mary Hardin-Baylor in four sets a few hours later.

Emma Clifford led Concordia Texas with 18 kills (2.57 per set) and nine blocks (1.29 per set). Sam Ladewig handed out 59 assists, including a season-high 35 in the nightcap.

The Tornados will return to the court on Friday, Sept. 27, when they travel to Alpine, Texas, to participate in another weekend of league pod matches. CTX will begin the weekend by playing Hardin-Simmons at 3 p.m.


MATCH ONE
The Tornados rolled past the Lobos (0-10) to start the day. Concordia won by scores of 31-29, 25-20 and 25-14.

CTX was challenged in the opening frame and overcame a six-point deficit (22-16) to take an early lead. The Tornados did not trail the rest of the match.

Sul Ross State committed 26 attack errors and hit only .019 in the league opener.

Ladewig dished out a match-high 24 helpers to pace Concordia's attack.

MATCH TWO
Concordia Texas tied up Mary Hardin-Baylor with a win in the second panel, but the Cru pulled away and won the final two frames to claim the four-set victory. UMHB won the contest by scores of 25-14, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-10.

Clifford netted 10 winners and Ladewig registered a double-double of 35 assists and 17 digs for the Tornados. Zöe Allen and Emily Powers chipped in with 17 and 12 stops, respectively.

Lauren Powell led the Cru with 15 kills, while Shelby Prather posted a match-high 40 helpers.
