SEGUIN, Texas – Four players scored in double figures, and the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team rolled to a 109-93 victory over Texas Lutheran in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
Josh Sanchez led the way for the Tornados (1-1) with a game-high 26 points. The Houston native buried six 3-pointers in the win.
Terry Corprew and
Rashad Coleman netted 17 points apiece, while
Andre Potts tallied 16 points off the bench.
Concordia Texas shot 51.6 percent (33-of-64) from the field, including 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from beyond the arc.
The Bulldogs (0-2) held a 24-23 lead with 8:03 remaining in the first half, but Sanchez hit a 3-pointer and gave the Tornados the lead for good.
Concordia stretched its advantage to 51-44 at halftime. The Tornados then increased their lead to 65-55 at the 13:10 mark of the second half, following a shot from downtown by
Adam Whitlock.
Texas Lutheran pulled within two (69-67) with 9:57 remaining, but CTX responded with an 11-2 spurt that gave the visitors an 11-point lead. Coleman spearheaded the run with six points, two steals and a rebound.
TLU made another late run, trimming the lead to 96-90 with 2:46 to play. However, Concordia again answered, this time outscoring the Bulldogs 13-3 to close out the game.
Four Texas Lutheran players also registered double figures, led by Zach Behr's 17 points.
The Tornados will travel to St. Edward's at 7 p.m. for an exhibition contest. The next regular season matchup for Concordia is at 4 p.m. Saturday at Schreiner.
