Downtown barrage carries Tornados past Skidmore on Monday night, 90-75

AUSTIN, Texas – Concordia University Texas knocked down 13 3-pointers, and the Tornados snapped a four-game losing streak with a 90-75 victory over Skidmore in a non-conference game on Monday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.

Concordia Texas (4-5) connected on 56.5 percent (13-for-23) of its shots from beyond the arc, while shooting 44.9 percent (31-of-69) overall.

Josh Sanchez scored a game-high 26 points and hit four triples. Andre Potts netted 25 points off the bench, including 7-of-9 from downtown.

The Thoroughbreds (3-5) were paced by Erik Sanders' 21 points, while Connor Merrill logged a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tornados took a 20-18 lead on Christopher Poe's jumper in the paint with 10:58 left in the first half and never looked back. CTX increased its advantage to 30-20 after PJ Escobar hit a long jumper with 7:32 in the opening panel. Skidmore cut the lead to three following Aldin Medunjanin's 3-pointer with 2:31 left. However, Concordia closed out the first half on a 9-0 run that was capped by a Potts 3-pointer in the final minute.

In the second half, the Tornados shot a blistering 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from behind the 3-point line. CTX opened the final period on a 7-2 run that pushed its lead to 53-36. The Tornados held the double-digit advantage until Martin Bedulskij's tip-in with 8:11 to play cut the lead to 73-65. However, Concordia turned to Potts and Sanchez, and the duo keyed a 15-3 run in the next five minutes. Potts hit two triples during the spurt, while Sanchez tallied five points. The Tornados then capped their scoring when Joshua Samuels found Poe for a layup with 36 seconds remaining.

Concordia, which snapped a four-game skid, will return to action on Saturday against East Texas Baptist. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.

POSTGAME NOTES
• Christopher Poe nearly logged a double-double in his collegiate debut on Monday. The freshman forward pulled down 10 rebounds and scored eight points in 24 minutes of action. He also became the first CTX player this season to log double-digit boards.
• Concordia's received 39 points off the bench, including 25 from Andre Potts.
• Terry Corprew logged six assists for the second consecutive game.
• Concordia and Skidmore met for the first time on Monday night.
• The Tornados improved to 4-1 against non-conference foes this season.
