ALPINE, Texas – Sul Ross State snapped the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team's three-game winning streak after capturing a 74-71 decision in the American Southwest Conference (ASC) opener on Thursday night at the Gallego Center.
The Lobos (1-5, 1-0 ASC) overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to pick up their first win of the season. Three Sul Ross State players scored double figures, led by Rocky Feliciano's game-high 20 points.
The Tornados (3-2, 0-1 ASC) shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the field in the loss.
Concordia Texas received a career-high 18 points from
Rashad Coleman.
Andre Potts added 11 points, while
Ben Page scored 10 and collected a team-high eight rebounds.
Josh Sanchez hit a 3-pointer with 17:57 to play in the game, which spurred a 19-8 run and allowed the Tornados to take a 57-45 advantage.
The Lobos then used a 23-6 run to claim a 68-63 lead with 3:05 remaining.
Concordia managed to stay close and took a 69-68 advantage after
Andre Potts connected on a layup with 1:22 to play.
After Feliciano converted a traditional three-point play for Sul Ross State, Coleman netted a layup to tie the game at 71-71.
On the ensuing possession, Mike Huffman was whistled for an offensive foul that allowed the Tornados a chance to regain the lead. However, CTX came up empty and then fouled Huffman, who sank a pair of free throws.
The Tornados then turned the ball over again before Trey Richardson hit one of two free throw attempts, giving the Lobos a 74-71 advantage.
Concordia had one final chance to pull even, but Potts' contested 3-pointer from the wing missed and time expired.
The Tornados will resume conference play on Saturday at Howard Payne. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Brownwood Coliseum.

Josh Sanchez scored eight points on Thursday, allowing him to surpass 1,000 points at Concordia. Sanchez has netted 1,004 points in 58 games with the Tornados, and he is the 13th player in program history to reach the milestone.
