Concordia Volleyball Grabs 3-0 Sweep at Howard Payne

BOX SCORE BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- The Concordia Texas volleyball team extended its winning streak to three with a 3-0 triumph over Howard Payne Friday night at the Brownsville Coliseum.

Jordan Redmond knocked down a match-high 13 kills. Carly Custer added 11 while hitting at a .308 clip, making only three errors on 26 total attacks. Lexi Perez (15 digs) and Katie Baker (14 digs) led the defensive effort. Redmond added four block assists to make her presence felt at the net.

The Tornados needed a dramatic comeback in the third set to get the sweep. Howard Payne led by as much as eight as late as 15-7 before the Tornados were able to come roaring back. 

Concordia used a 9-1 spurt to draw within a point at 16-15. The Lady Jackets fired off a 6-1 rally of their own to grab a 22-15 advantage. The Tornados would come out of a called time out with a renewed spirit, grabbing a 6-0 run to draw within a point at 22-21. The Lady Jackets used one of their breaks at that point. 

Both squads would battle to the first tie of the set at 23. Howard Payne would serve for set point at 24-23, but a Redmond kill snuffed out the chance. Custer would put Concordia in position for match point with a kill of her own before Redmond garnered the game's final point at 26-24.

The Tornados commanded the first set from the begging. They never trailed in the frame and finished strong after breaking a 2-2 tie. Concordia ended the opener with a 25-18 victory.

The Tornados held the Lady Jackets to a .000 attack percentage in the second set. Concordia once again was in control much of the stanza, however a late Howard Payne rally would tie things at 19 and again at 21. The Tornados finished the set on a 4-0 run for the 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Tornados' road trip continues tomorrow at 3 PM at Sul Ross State.
