RICHARDSON, Texas – Donovan Ford and
Andre Potts both scored 28 points off the bench, and the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team rolled to a 96-84 win over Texas-Dallas on Saturday afternoon at UTD Activity Center.
The Tornados (16-9, 12-8 ASC) used Ford and Potts' contributions to earn a 67-29 advantage in bench scoring. Concordia Texas also picked up 20 assists on 30 made baskets. The Tornados shot 47.6 percent from the field, including 45.7 percent (16-of-35) from beyond the arc.
Ford and Potts were joined in double figures by
Josh Sanchez and
Rashad Coleman. Sanchez scored all 15 of his points in the second half, while Coleman tallied 13 points overall.
The Comets (16-9, 11-9 ASC) shot 58.5 percent (24-of-41) from the floor, but only 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from behind the three-point line.
Concordia led for nearly 37 minutes in the game. The Tornados claimed the lead for good when Ford buried his third 3-pointer with 5:45 left in the first half. The Port Arthur native hit two more triples in the opening frame and seven overall in the contest.
CTX held a 45-37 lead at halftime. The Tornados then pushed their advantage to 52-42 in the first four minutes of the second half. Concordia led by as much as 16 points in the final half before collecting the 12-point victory.
The Tornados clinched the No. 6 seed in next week's American Southwest Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by East Texas Baptist in Marshall. Concordia will play third-seeded Louisiana College in a quarterfinal matchup at 12 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 in Ornelas Gymnasium.
