Concordia Texas upends Hardin-Simmons, moves into ASC Tournament title game

MARSHALL, Texas – The sixth-seeded Concordia University Texas men's basketball team overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to upend No. 2 seed Hardin-Simmons, 72-66, in the American Southwest Conference Tournament Semifinals on Friday at Ornelas Gymnasium.

With the two teams tied a 35-all in the second half, the Cowboys (20-7) went on a 13-2 run to take a 48-37 lead with 14:45 to play. The Tornados responded with a 9-0 run, capped by Donovan Ford's 3-pointer with 11:18 left, to pull within two.

Hardin-Simmons was able to push the lead to five on a pair of Justin Jones free throws. After Josh Sanchez answered with two free throws, Clay Marley hit a layup to cut the lead to 51-50. Sanchez helped CTX pull even at 53-all by scoring three straight points. The two teams then remained tied or within two points over the next four minutes.

Concordia went ahead for good when Andre Potts buried a 3-pointer with 3:03 to play. Potts helped the Tornados increase their advantage to 67-62 on a jumper a minute later. The Cowboys were able to cut the lead to one with 53 seconds left. However, CTX scored the final five points, all free throws, to close out the game.

Rashad Coleman logged the first double-double of the season for the Tornados, as the sophomore guard scored 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Potts tallied 15 points and Sanchez added 14.

Derrick Jefferson led Hardin-Simmons with 24 points, while Nathaniel Jack grabbed 11 boards.

Concordia will meet host and No. 1 seed East Texas Baptist in the championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
