BOX SCORE 2 SEGUIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas volleyball team took home its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, sweeping Schreiner, 3-0, at the Texas Lutheran Bulldog Classic.
However, the host Bulldogs would hand the Tornados a 3-0 setback to finish the day.MATCH ONE - CTX 3, SU 0
The Tornados needed extra points to settle the opening set, but took it 27-25. Concordia would remain in control the rest of the way, grabbing the final two frames 25-18, 25-19.
Katie Baker recorded her first double-double of the season, nailing 11 kills and 12 digs.
Skye Truss also posted 10 kills to help the offense. Defensively,
Lexi Perez chipped in 13 digs. Perez was also sharp at the serving line, landing three aces.
Nacole Miller dished out a match-high 22 assists.
In the first set, Concordia worked from behind for nearly the duration of the frame. The Tornados trailed as late as 16-12 before taking advantage of Mountaineer miscues. The set was tied as late as 24-all, and Schreiner would have an opportunity for set point. However,
Jordan Redmond tied the stanza at 25-all to give the team the momentum to win the set.
In the middle frame, Concordia rocketed to an early lead and never relenquished control. The third frame saw the Tornados land attacks at a .400 clip.
MATCH TWO - TLU 3, CTX 0
The Tornados could not derail the Bulldogs' season-opening win streak on Saturday night to conclude the Bulldog Classic.
Texas Lutheran commanded the first set, 25-14, but Concordia would hang around in sets two and three.
The Tornados trailed by as much as seven at 12-5 before drawing as close as five at 18-13. The Bulldogs closed out the middle set with a 25-21 win.
The final set saw only two ties with both coming early, but Concordia never trailed by more than six the entire way. Unfortunately, Texas Lutheran would close out the frame, and the match, with a 25-20 triumph.
Carly Custer led the Tornado attack with eight kills while
Katie Baker and
Skye Truss added seven apiece.
Lexi Perez turned in 18 digs. Truss also had two solo blocks to aid the defensive effort.
Concordia returns home Sept. 15 for to open conference play against Hardin-Simmons. First serve is at 7 p.m.
