BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas volleyball team won its conference opener in 3-1 fashion over Hardin-Simmons Tuesday night at the Concordia Fieldhouse.
Katie Baker recorded a double-double (13 kills, 10 digs) to help lead the Tornado attack,
Skye Truss added nine kills and hit at a ,353 clip, which lead the match (min. 10 TA).
Lexi Perez tallied a match-high 19 digs while
K'Lyn Brigance added a season-best 21 assists.
Jordan Redmond added four total blocks (two solo, four assists) to help the defensive effort.
After trailing 15-13, Concordia fired off a 12-1 run to close out and take the opening set 25-16. The Tornados maintained control in the second frame and took it 25-17.
Hardin-Simmons regrouped, however, as both teams went toe-to-toe in the final two stanzas. The Cowgirls used a 6-0 rally to grab a 9-8 advantage over the Tornados early. HSU maintained a lead until Concordia tied things up at 18 all. The Tornados were able to rally to a 24-22 advantage before the Cowgirls fired off four straight points to avoid the sweep.
Concordia began the fourth and deciding set with control, rocketing out to a 7-4 lead. Hardin-Simmons would not back down, however, as it used a 6-0 spurt to get a 10-7 advantage. The Cowgirls would go on to lead as late as 23-21 before the Tornados used kills from Baker and
Nacole Miller in addition to HSU miscues to claw back. It was Baker's final kill of the match that knotted the score at 24-all. A kill by Redmond and a Cowgirl attack error gave Concordia the set at 26-24.
The Tornados remain at home for a 7 p.m. match against Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday evening.
