BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Women's basketball won its fifth straight contest to start 2016-17 as they defeated Belhaven 67-46 on Thursday night.
Jaela Dejean scored a game-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field while also racking up six steals for the game. Emily Cullers and Alyssa Marquez scored in double figures for Tornados too. Defense was key for CTX, as they held the Blazers to 28 percent shooting from the field.
Dejean scored seven of the team's first nine points as the Tornados took the early lead in first quarter. A Mercedes Ellison jumper in the final minute of the quarter gave them a 13-8 lead as they headed to the second quarter. CTX opened the second quarter on a 12-3 run extending their lead to 25-11 after a layup by Raven Cato. The Tornados headed to the half leading 29-19 as Dejean led all scorers with 15 points.
CTX scored the first eight points of second half, including three-pointers by Dejean and Cullers, taking a 37-19 lead. Belhaven did not go away so easily though, as they went on their own 10-0 run, eventually cutting the deficit to 46-40. The Tornados headed to the fourth quarter leading 49-40. In the final quarter, CTX dominated, outscoring the Blazers 18-6 including three straight three-pointers by the Tornados pulling away for 67-46 victory.
Concordia is now 5-0 on the season and will head out on a two-game road trip as they face the University of the Ozarks in the first conference matchup of the year on Monday, Dec. 5.
