BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas – Carly Custer hammered a game-high 25 kills to help the Concordia Texas volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2 victory Friday night in the Tornado Gym.
It was the first time in nearly two years that a CTX player tallied 25 kills or more in a match. The last such performance came from Katie Baker, who garnered 26 kills in 2014. Custer also grabbed 18 digs, earning her a double-double.
Lianne VanDyke dished out 53 assists and tallied 16 digs while Kelly Farina drilled 11 kills and 15 digs, both earning double-doubles, as well. Marissa Stinson added 10 kills. Lexi Perez led CTX with 19 digs. Stinson had a match-high four block assists.
The Tornados (5-5, 1-2 American Southwest Conference) handled the first two cents 25-14 and 25-19. However, Sul Ross (1-10, 0-1) back in the next frames. The Lobos found themselves in long stretches in both the third and fourth sets, which they controlled nearly wire-to-wire.
The fourth frame was not without some dramatics, however. As Concordia found itself trailing 12-4, the Tornados crawled back to outscore their guests 16-13.
While CTX dropped the set, it did come out aggressive in the deciding fifth stanza. The teams found themselves tied six times. Sul Ross opened with a 7-4 advantage, but a 4-0 Tornado stretch gave the home team the lead for the final time.
Concordia returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Howard Payne.
