BOX SCORE 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team split its performance at the Concordia Invitational Saturday. The Tornados opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Concordia Wisconsin then closed the day with a 3-1 victory over Concordia Ann Arbor.
MATCH ONE: CUW d. CTX 3-0 (25-21, 21-12, 25-20)
CTX looked like it would avoid a second straight sweep, firing off a huge rally late in the third set. After trailing 18-8, the Tornados rallied to within a point at 20-19, but a few costly mistakes caused the Falcons to come away with the sweep.
After CTX took a 13-12 lead, CUW rallied to outscore the Tornados 13-9 to close out the first set. The Falcons used that momentum to control the second frame wire-to-wire, coming away with a 25-12 win.
CTX's Carly Custer had a match-high nine kills. Lianne VanDyke had a match-best 14 assists and Lexi Perez recorded 18 digs, also a match high.
MATCH TWO: CTX d. CUAA 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-14)
The Tornados found themselves trailing early in the opening set at 10-6, but they quickly erupted to outscore the Cardinals (7-4) 19-9 the rest of the way to earn the win.
CUAA narrowly took the second set, 26-24, stealing it late. Despite this, however, the CTX overcame adversity earlier in the frame. Behind 5-0 early, the Tornados fought back into the match. After trailing 20-15, CTX erupted to outscore CUAA 8-3 to tie the stanza at 23 apiece.
The Tornados had the edge for the final two frames, controlling them 25-18 and 25-14.
Carly Custer tied for a match-best 15 kills while freshmen Marissa Stinson and Kelly Farina added 12 and 10, respectively. Farina (10 K, 12 dig) and Lianne VanDyke (41 A, 10 dig) had their first career double-doubles in the contest. Lexi Perez had a match-best 22 digs. Stinson also added five total blocks and hit at a .556 clip for the day (12 K, 18 TA, 2 E).
CUAA's Erica den Boer logged a triple-double on the match to lead the Cardinals (15 K, 17 A, 11 dig).
The Tornados hit the road for the ASC opener Sept. 6 at McMurry. It is the first of six straight away contests for CTX.
