The Concordia women's basketball team fell behind early and was unable to recover as they dropped one against Sul Ross State 74-49 on Thursday night.
The Tornados (10-7, 3-5 ASC) were unable to get things going throughout the game as they shot 29.7 percent from the field as a team. The Lobos )9-9, 6-3 ASC), meanwhile, shot 46.9 percent from the field including 12 threes as they led from start to finish.
Mercedes Ellison was one of three players for CTX who finished in double figures as she led the team with 13 points, while
Raven Cato and
Brenisha Payne had 11 and 10 respectively.
In the first quarter, both teams struggled to score as the first points of the game were not scored until the 7:31 mark with SRSU taking a 1-0 lead. The Tornados would tie it at 6-6 with 4:00 left in the quarter after a layup by Ellison. At the end of the first quarter, CTX trailed 12-9. The Lobos opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run as they led 22-11 with 6:32 left in the quarter. The Tornados struggled offensively in the quarter going 2-14 from the field and trailed 33-15 at the half. Ellison and Cato each had seven points for CTX.
In the third quarter, the Tornados scored 17 points, including knocking down three from beyond the arc. CTX held SRSU to just 38.5 percent from the field and 18 points in the quarter as they headed to the fourth quarter trailing 51-32. In the fourth quarter, the Tornados once again scored 17 points, but the Lobos would not miss as they hit 11-12 free-throws in the quarter, and went on to defeat CTX 74-49.
The Tornados have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Brownwood, Texas to face Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
