AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia women's basketball team went to overtime for a second straight game, but were unable to rally against UT Tyler falling 78-69 on Saturday afternoon.
Jaela Dejean led the Tornados (9-5, 2-4 ASC) with a team-high 24 points to go with six rebounds.
Brenisha Payne went 9-10 from the free-throw line to finish with 17 points, while
Emily Cullers had 13 points, including three three-pointers. CTX held the Patriots (11-4, 5-3 ASC) to 36 percent shooting from the field, but were out-rebounded 55-40.
The Tornados took an early 6-1 lead in the first quarter, but UT Tyler was able to climbed back to take a 14-13 lead with 2:59 left.
Kaycie Dunkerley split a pair of free-throws and CTX was tied with the Patriots at 17 all at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to extend their lead. Dejean was the go-to player for the Tornados as she scored 10 of her 13 first-half points in the second quarter, including the last eight points. CTX headed to the locker room leading 33-30 at the half.
The third quarter continued to be a battle between the Tornados and Patriots as CTX held a 43-41 lead with 4:24 left in the quarter. Cullers followed with her third three in the game plus a jumper in the paint for the Tornados and took a 50-46 lead into the final quarter. UT Tyler opened the fourth quarter with a 17-7 run to take the lead 63-57 with 3:35 left. But the Tornados rallied with an 8-2 run, including six straight points by Payne to tie it up at 65-65. Mercedes Ellison was unable to get her shot to go at the buzzer and headed to overtime for a second straight game.
In the overtime period, Dejean's layup kept the score tied at 69 all with 1:55 left in the period, but the Patriots would end the game on a 9-0 run as CTX lost 78-69.
The Tornados will try to get back to their winning ways when they travel to Pineville, La., to face Louisiana College on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
