LONGVIEW, Texas –
Marissa Stinson reached double figures in kills in both matches as the Concordia Texas volleyball team won both games in day one of the American Southwest Conference Crossover tournament on Friday.
In game one of the day, the Tornados (7-5, 4-1 ASC) faced East Texas Baptist, defeating the Tigers in a thrilling straight set win.
Carly Custer and
Marissa Stinson led CTX in kills with 12 each, while
Georgia Quiroz provided 36 assists.
Sydney Dudney finished with a team-high 16 digs as the Tornados won their fourth match in their last five games.
In a closely contested match, the first two sets would be decided by only two points each. In the first set, trailing 14-5 early, CTX would rally back, going on a 20-9 run to take the first set 25-23. Custer would close out the set for the Tornados with five straight kills.
In the second set, the largest lead for either team was only five points in a back-and-forth battle. Tied at 25-all, the lead would change four more times before CTX came out on top, taking the set 31-29 and a two-set lead heading to the third.
In the final set, the Tornados would come from behind once again, turning a 12-6 deficit into a lead after a 13-0 run, capped off a kill by Stinson. CTX never looked back, taking the set and match for the first win of the ASC Crossover.
In the second match of the day, facing Belhaven, the Tornados would split the first two sets before going on to take the next two sets and the match for their second win of the day.
Four CTX players would finish in double figures in kills, led by
Kelly Farina's 15 in the match. Quiroz had 44 assists at the setter position, tying her career-high.
Tied at 1-1, the Tornados and Blazers were tied at 23-all. CTX would take three of the next four points, capped off by a Stinson kill and BU error to win the set 26-23. In the final set, up 14-11, the Tornados closed out the set and match with an 11-4 run for their fourth conference win of the year.
Up next, CTX will take on UT Tyler on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the final day of the ASC Crossover from Longview, Texas.
