AUSTIN, Texas –
Mercedes Ellison poured in a career high 24 points and added five rebounds to help the Concordia Texas women's basketball team grab a 68-57 win over Sul Ross Thursday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.
Ellison, a junior from Victoria, Texas, shot an impressive 56.3 percent from the floor in the game and hit six of her seven foul shots. The Tornados moved to 9-10, 5-6 ASC on the year and have now won three of their last four games.
Sul Ross held a lead for the majority of the first half, going up by as many as 11 points with 5:23 left in the second quarter. CTX rallied in the third period, going on a 10-0 run to take a 39-38 lead on a free throw from Ellison.
The Lady Lobos swelled the lead back up to nine in the fourth, going up 51-42 with 8:46 left to play. The Tornados took the game over from there, outscoring SRSU 26-6 over the final 8:22.
One of the main keys to the dominant fourth quarter was three huge 3-pointers from
Kaycie Dunkerley, all coming within two minutes of each other. The third shot from beyond the arc gave CTX a 63-53 lead.
Jaela Dejean joined Dunkerley and Ellison in double figures with 17 points to go along with eight assists and a career-high seven steals.
The Tornados did a phenomenal job on the defensive side of the ball, forcing 36 Lady Lobo turnovers and swiping a season-high 22 steals. The 22 steals were the most for Concordia since December 14, 2014 when they produced 22 steals against UMHB.
CTX will look to push their winning streak to three games Saturday when they take on Howard Payne at 2:00 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
