Stinson, Tornados take care of LeTourneau in ASC Tournament opener

BELTON, Texas – Marissa Stinson had a team-high 18 kills to power the Concordia Texas volleyball team to a 3-1 win over LeTourneau on Thursday in their American Southwest Conference Tournament opener.

Stinson, who on Wednesday was named to her second straight ASC All-Conference team, had 18 kills on a .484 hitting percentage and the Tornados won the final two sets to take the match 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19.

In the first set, the Yellow Jackets would keep it close as CTX held a 13-11 lead midway through, but a quick 8-2 run, including back-to-back blocks by Tristyn Massey and Marjani Myles, would break open the set, taking it 25-16.

LeTourneau would even at a set apiece after a nail-biting second set, where the Tornados faltered 25-23.

Stinson would find her groove in the third set though, tallying six kills in the set alone, while CTX had 16 as a team, and would not look back, winning it 25-19 to go up a set.

In the final set, Massey, who was also named to the ASC All-Conference team, would tally four of her 15 kills in the set as the Tornados held off the Yellow Jackets 25-19 to win the match in four sets.

Georgia Quiroz, meanwhile, recorded her 13th double-double of the year, finishing with a team-high 15 digs and 27 assists. Lianne VanDyke would pour in 21 assists, while Kelly Farina and Rylee Davis had 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

Concordia Texas moves on to the double-elimination portion of the bracket and will next face UT Dallas, the top seed out of the ASC East Division, on Friday at 11 a.m. inside the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton, Texas.
