ALPINE, Texas – Behind a dominant defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack, the Concordia Texas women's basketball team closed the regular season with a 60-44 win over Sul Ross at Gallego Center.
The Tornados close the regular season with a 14-11 overall record and 10-7 in American Southwest Conference play while clinching the number three seed in the ASC West. CTX closes the regular season by winning seven of their last eight games.
After falling behind 3-0 early in the game, the Tornados went on a 13-0 run to take a 10 point lead. CTX led 17-10 after one quarter.
The second quarter started much like the first with the Tornados moving ahead by as many as 15 points after
Alyssa Marquez knocked down a 3-pointer with 5:40 left in the half.
The lead extended to as many as 20 points in the third when
Mercedes Ellison knocked down a jumper. Ellison, a junior from Victoria, Texas, finished with 12 points and went 6-for-8 from the floor in the win.
The Lobos made a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 11, but were unable to get any closer.
CTX held SRSU to just 20.6 percent from the floor and 12.0 percent from 3-point-range.
Down low, the Tornados out-rebounded Sul Ross 47-41 thanks in large part to a career-high 13 rebounds from
Sara Perez.
Next up, the Tornados will take on UT Tyler in the first game of the ASC Tournament hosted by ASC East Division No. 1 seed UT Dallas on Thursday at noon against UT Tyler.
