TYLER, Texas – Trailing 3-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Concordia Texas softball team scored four unanswered runs in the final three innings of to defeat #14 East Texas Baptist University 4-3 Friday in the second game of the American Southwest Conference Tournament.
With the win, the Tornados move to 25-16 overall and tie the school record for second-most wins in a season set in 2013. The victory also advances CTX to the winner's bracket game against the winner of UT Tyler and Mary Hardin-Baylor currently scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
The Tigers jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to left field. ETBU tacked on another run in the fourth thanks a double that fell in just in front of a diving
Olivia Kaase.
CTX climbed back into the game in the fifth. After back-to-back singles from
Haley Dennett and
Emma Martino along with an error put runners on second and third with nobody out, the Tornados got a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Payton Walker and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Kaase to cut the lead to 3-2.
The combination of
Simone Langland and
Jorden Russell kept the Tigers off the board in the bottom of the fifth, and allowed CTX to tie the game when
Mycahla Howard ripped an RBI double to left to bring home pinch runner
Jaden Shoults. Howard, a junior from Santa Fe, Texas, battled throughout the 14-pitch at-bat, fouling off nine pitches before launching the double.
In the seventh, the Tornados got a leadoff double from
Brittani Whitten who then quickly advanced to third on an error by the catcher.
Alexia Rowe then brought Whitten home with a sacrifice fly to give the Tornados the lead for the first time.
Russell (11-11) got two groundouts and a strikeout in the bottom half of the inning to clinch the win for CTX. The junior from Leander, Texas, picked up the victory in the circle after retiring all seven batters she faced out of the bullpen.
Langland, a freshman out of Cypress, Texas, got the start and tossed 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and striking out two.
The Tornados will face off against either UT Tyler or UMHB in the winner's bracket game Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the ASC Championship currently scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
