Tornados dominate Howard Payne in straight sets

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Sam Mendez, Marjani Myles and Tristyn Massey each had seven kills and the Concordia Texas volleyball team returned to their winning ways with a 3-0 sweep of Howard Payne on Thursday.

The Tornados hit .247 as a team, rolling past the Yellow Jackets in three sets, 25-19, 25-7 and 25-16.

In the first set, CTX registered 17 of their 25 points with a kill, jumping out to a 10-5 lead. After a kill by Cassie Jackson, the Tornados held a 21-11 lead, but HPU did not go down easily, reeling off seven straight points and cutting the deficit to three.

Concordia Texas persevered though, winning four of the final five points, capped off by a Sarah Ghormley kill.

In the second set, it was all Tornados in a wire-to-wire set win, tallying 11 kills and had only one error in the frame to take a two-set lead.

In the final set, CTX trailed for the first time all night after a Yellow Jackets' 5-0 run made it 10-7. The Tornados responded with their own run though, winning nine of the next 11 points to retake the lead.

Concordia Texas closed out the match with another run, winning the final six points of the set, capped off by an HPU attack error.

Georgia Quiroz had a double-double with 13 digs and 15 assists. She now sits 20 assists away from the program's all-time individual assists record. Rylee Davis, meanwhile, is also trying to make history as she finished with nine digs and now is 35 digs away from the 1000-dig club.

She would become the fifth player in program history to reach the mark and only the second since 2008 when the sport moved to the 25-point rally-scoring era. Meanwhile, Ghormley had a team-high 16 digs along with six kills as the Tornados have now won eight of their last nine matches.

Concordia Texas returns to the court on Saturday when they will face Sul Ross State at 2 p.m. in Alpine, Texas.
