Tornados have a block party, sweep McMurry

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team registered 14 total blocks and took care of McMurry in straight sets for their 14th sweep of the season on Friday.

On a night when the Tornados struggled attacking at the net, hitting 0.97 as a team, CTX relied on their defensive prowess to sweep the War Hawks 25-22, 25-19 and 25-19.

In the opening set, the Tornados fell behind early 2-0, but responded with six straight points to take the lead. McMurry would not go down easily, rallying back to even it at 22-all in the set. CTX did not sweat it though, finishing off the set win with three points in a row, capped off by a War Hawks attack error.

In the second set, the Tornados and McMurry battled back and forth with neither team having a bigger lead than three before being tied at 18-18. Concordia Texas took control of the set, ending it on a 7-1 run, including back-to-back blocks by Massey and Marjani Myles to gain a two-set lead.

In the final set, the Tornados fell behind once again, trailing 8-3 early on.  Concordia Texas rallied though, evening the set at 15-all after a War Hawks service error and a block from Myles and Sam Mendez.

Leading 20-18, the Tornados ended the match in a sweep, winning five of the final six points for their 11th win in conference play.

Myles finished with nine total blocks, tying her career best, while Massey had seven for the match. Georgia Quiroz nearly had a double-double with 17 assists and nine digs, while Kyndall Ellis had a team-high 11 digs.

It is the 14th sweep of the season for the Tornados, matching last season's mark and it is their most straight-set wins since 1999.

Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround when they host Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 1 p.m., celebrating senior day prior to the match inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
