SPOKANE, Wash. –
Payton Berger nearly had a double-double with a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball team fell in their season opener to No. 21 Whitman 90-51 in the first day of the Whit Classic on Friday.
Berger shot 50 percent from the field and grabbed four offensive boards for the Tornados, who had a tall task against the Northwest Conference preseason favorite Blues.
Whitman opened the game on a 10-0 run before
Kaycie Dunkerley knocked down one of her two 3-pointers on the night. Trailing by 16, CTX closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run and cut it to single digits after
Kennedy Donovan's pair of free throws.
The Tornados had their highest scoring output in the second quarter, producing 17 points, but trailed WC 47-29 at the half.
In the second half, the Blues found their stroke from the floor, shooting 55 percent from the floor and CTX fell 90-51 to open the season.
Seven players scored for the Tornados, including
Sam Hopper adding eight points and four rebounds, while Dunkerley and
Madi Maxwell each finished with seven points.
Havyn Perez was unable to find a shooting rhythm, but dished out a team-high six assists.
Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround, facing tournament host Whitworth on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. from Spokane, Wash.
