Tornados historic season ends in ASC Semifinals

RICHARDSON, Texas – Lianne VanDyke and Sarah Ghormley each recorded a double-double, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas volleyball team fell short 3-1 to UT Dallas in the American Southwest Conference semifinals on Friday at the UTD Activity Center.

The Tornados, facing the top seed out of the ASC East in the Comets, battled back to win the third set, but were unable to force a decisive fifth set, falling 16-25, 24-26, 25-19 and 18-25.

In the opening set, CTX stayed within striking distance, pulling within one after a Comets error to make it 14-13. UT Dallas, though, finished off the set going on an 11-3 run to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, it was a back and forth battle between CTX and UTD with neither team having a bigger lead than three points.

Trailing 23-20, the Tornados reeled off three straight points, capped off by Sarah Ghormley's kill to knot it up at 23-all. The Comets would go on to take a 2-0 lead though, winning three of the next four points.

In the third set, CTX took advantage of 10 Comets errors along with 11 of their own kills in the frame to force a fourth set.

In the final set, the Tornados recorded their best hitting percentage of the match with a .333 mark, but could not force a fifth set, falling 3-1 to UTD.

VanDyke finished her final collegiate match with a double-double, tallying 31 assists and 14 digs, while Ghormley hit at a .324 mark, recording 15 kills along with 11 digs. Tristyn Massey, meanwhile, also had 15 kills for the match.

Concordia Texas finishes the year with a historic season, tying the program record for most wins in a single season, setting the program record for most conference wins in a single season and reaching the ASC semifinals for the third straight season.

The team says goodbye to its three seniors in VanDyke. Massey and Sam Mendez, but return next season with five starters, including All-ASC selections Ghormley, Georgia Quiroz and Marjani Myles.
