BELTON, Texas – Four Tornados scored in double figures, led by
Zaid Harris and
Philip Meikle, who each finished with 16 points, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team fell short to Mary Hardin-Baylor 102-93 in their conference opener on Monday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
The Tornados forced 26 Cru turnovers on the night resulting in 30 points, but were unable to slow down UMHB's offensive shooting.
Concordia Texas fell behind by as much as 19 points in the first half after the Cru went on a 29-7 run.
The Tornados did not break though, using an 8-0 spurt late in the half to pull within single digits of UMHB. At the halfway point, CTX trailed 48-43, led by Meikle's 10 points.
In the second half, the Tornados came out on fire, hitting five of their first eight shots and took their first lead of the second half after Ronnie Hamiton's 3-pointer made it 53-52. Hamilton knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, finishing the night with 12 points.
Harris, meanwhile, began to take the game over, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the first five minutes of the second half.
Concordia Texas took their largest lead of the game with 12:39 to go after
Alexander Estrada's 3-pointer. Estrada finished the game with a career-high 15 points, knocking down 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
The Cru would not go away though, retaking the lead after a 13-0 run late in the half to make it 85-81. The Tornados pulled within two after
Luis Gonzalez's jumper in the paint, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling 102-93.
Harris finished the game with a near triple-double, scoring 16 points along with six assists and seven rebounds.
Tommy Holiday, meanwhile, produced 13 points and snagged a team-high nine rebounds in the loss.
Concordia Texas will have a long layoff before returning to the court on Dec. 28 when they will host North Central College on Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
