AUSTIN, Texas –
Joe Neal scored a game-high 23 points and the Concordia Texas men's basketball team snapped their three-game losing skid, defeating Howard Payne in dominating fashion 94-66 on Thursday.
Neal shot 8-for-12 from the field, including a 3-for-5 mark from three-point range, scoring 23 points along with a team-high six rebounds and six steals.
DeTarrius Kirk, meanwhile, scored nine of his 15 points in the second half, his eighth double-digit scoring output of the season.
Concordia Texas would take control early first half, shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half and used a suffocating defense to make the Yellow Jackets uncomfortable. The Tornados would force 41 turnovers on the night, leading to 57 of the team's 94 points.
A 22-5 first half run would give CTX a double-digit lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Neal would score 16 points in the half and the Tornados headed to the locker room with a 48-31 halftime lead.
In the second half, CTX continued to force the issue against HPU. Neal began the half with a layup plus the foul, pushing the Tornados' lead to 20.
It would turn into a well-rounded team performance as 14 different players at least scored for CTX. The Tornados would take their largest lead late in the game after
Charles Johnson III's driving layup made it 93-62.
Concordia Texas would finish off the Yellow Jackets, winning it 94-68, snapping their three-game losing streak.
Spencer Bone would hit a pair of 3-pointers, finishing with eight points, while
Ronnie Hamilton dished out five assists along with three rebounds and seven points.
Next, CTX will close out its regular season on Saturday, facing Sul Ross State at 3 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse. Prior to the game, the team will celebrate its four seniors for their career accomplishments.
