AUSTIN, Texas –
Lindsay Carter put up a career-high 23 points to help the Concordia Texas women's basketball team defeat Sul Ross State 67-64 Saturday in the season finale at Concordia Fieldhouse.
Carter, a sophomore from Dodd City, Texas, went 6-for-8 from 3-point-range and also pulled down seven rebounds as CTX closes the season 8-17 overall, 3-13 in American Southwest Conference play.
The Tornados also got solid efforts from
Kaycie Dunkerley and
Payton Berger, who both scored in double figures in the victory.
The two teams traded buckets throughout the first quarter, with neither team leading by more than six points as the Lobos took a 13-9 advantage at the end of the first.
Sul Ross State took their largest lead of the game in the second, going on a 9-1 run to take a 23-15 lead with 7:16 left in the first half.
CTX did not go away, however, closing the half on a 17-6 run to take a 32-29 lead into the locker room at the break.
The third quarter looked much like the first, with neither team able to create a ton of separation. With the score 43-42 late in the period, The Tornados were able to create some separation by virtue a 9-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Carter.
The Lobos made another run midway through the fourth, taking a 55-54 lead after a 13-1 run with 4:49 to play.
The lead did not last long as Carter nailed back-to-back 3-point buckets to give the lead right back to CTX.
Down the stretch, after SRSU took a 64-63 lead, the Tornados turned to Berger and Dunkerley who both nailed clutch free throws in the final 13 seconds of the contest to seal the victory.
Dunkerley, a junior from Azle, Texas, finished with the contest 16 points and seven boards. She closes the year with 79 made 3-pointers, a school record for the most 3-pointers in a single season.
Berger, meanwhile, produced a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win. The junior from Azle, Texas, finished the season with a double-double in three of her last four games.
The Tornados will gear up for next season as they return every player from the 2018-19 roster to the squad for 2019-20.
