AUSTIN, Texas –
Anissa Garcia finished the day 4-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored to help the Concordia Texas softball team earn a split of a pair of games against Schreiner on Tuesday at Tornado Softball Field.
The Tornados started the day by grabbing a 7-4 comeback victory in game one of the doubleheader, but dropped game two 3-2 as they move to 4-5 on the season.
Garcia, a sophomore out of Corpus Christi, Texas, went 3-for-4 with a run scored to highlight the Tornados' win in game number one.
After the Mountaineers jumped ahead 1-0 in the early going, CTX quickly responded with a run in the second inning thanks to an RBI groundout from
Breanna Heredia.
The Tornados took the lead in the fourth when
Olivia Kaase dropped down a perfect bunt single to bring home Garcia.
Schreiner (3-7) answered, however, with two runs in the top half of the fifth inning to re-take the lead 3-2.
In the bottom half of the fifth, CTX used their speed to take advantage of a couple of miscues by the Mountaineer defense. The Tornados tied the contest when
Taylor Smith raced home all the way from second base on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder.
Mycahla Howard added another run for CTX when she swiped third and advanced home on an overthrow by the catcher.
The Tornados added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI single from
Haley Dennett and a two-RBI double off the bat of
Ashley Hallmark.
Heather Casiano (2-0) closed out the bottom half of the seventh to pick up the win and seal the 7-4 victory for the Tornados.
In game number two, CTX grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Garcia hit an infield single along with a throwing error brought home Howard and Kaase.
The Mountaineers did not go away quietly, scoring three times with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Offensively, the Tornados were unable to muster up anything the rest of the way and dropped another close contest. In total, CTX has lost by a total of just four runs in their last three losses.
Next up, the Tornados will return to American Southwest Conference competition as they travel to Longview, Texas, to take on LeTourneau with a doubleheader starting at 5:00 on Friday night.
