LONGVIEW, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's tennis team had a stellar day on the court Friday, defeating Centenary 9-0 and following it up with a thrilling 5-4 victory over LeTourneau to open American Southwest Conference play at the Davis Tennis Courts.
The Tornados have now won three straight contests and move to 4-3 on the young season.
In the first matchup of the day, CTX controlled both doubles and singles en rout to their first 9-0 sweep since April 17, 2018.
The combination of
Alexis Popovich and
Kaitlin Stevens along with
Claire Austin and
Genna Ellinwood both picked up 8-1 victories playing on lines one and three, respectively. Elania Evans and
Camille Kempf also won their match on line two, grabbing an 8-5 win.
In the singles contests, the Tornados were dominant, picking up straight set victories in all six singles matchups.
Evans, a freshman from Sugar Land, Texas, and Kempf, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, both swept through their matches without dropping a game, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Stevens, Ellinwood and
Leyla Martinez were just as brilliant, combining to lose just four total games to post scores of (6-1, 6-0), (6-1, 6-0) and 6-2, 6-0, respectively.
In the second matchup of the day, CTX found themselves in a close contest throughout.
The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead early by taking two of the three doubles matches. Playing on line three, Ellinwood and Kempf managed to pick up an 8-2 victory and make the score 2-1 heading to singles play.
Ellinwood and Kempf were both dominant in singles as well, grabbing straight set wins of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively. Evans also was able to pick up a win in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-1 playing on line five.
For the day, Ellinwood, a senior from Pflugerville, Texas, dropped just one total game while managing to grab two straight set victories.
With the score tied 4-4, Austin, a freshman out of Dallas, took her match to three sets after winning the first and dropping the second. In the third, Austin managed to grab a 7-4 tiebreak victory 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to seal the win for the Tornados.
Next up, CTX will look to push their winning streak to four as they take on East Texas Baptist at 9 a.m. in Marshall, Texas.
