RICHARDSON, Texas – Tied at four-all,
Evan Pena Jr. would win a thrilling three-set match at line five singles to clinch the team win for Concordia Texas men's tennis team as they defeated UT Dallas 5-4 on Friday to open up conference play.
The Tornadoes would open the match winning two of the three doubles matches.
Joshua Bode and
Esteban Arredondo would team up at line one to take down the Comets' Marlo Jelev and Giovanni Zamboni 8-5. After falling at line two doubles,
Adam Compton and Pena Jr. would pick CTX up at line three with an 8-1 victory to give the team a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles matches.
In the singles matches, Arredondo would grab his second win of the match with a straight set win at line three. Bode, meanwhile, snagged the fourth point of the match, winning 6-3, 6-2 at line one.
UT Dallas would counter, winning at line two, four and six to tie it up at four-all heading into the final match of the day with Pena Jr. taking on Eric Chen at line five.
Pena Jr. would win the first set 7-5, before dropping the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6, leading to a decisive third set for the match. Pena Jr. would take the set 6-4 to clinch both the individual match and the team match as the Tornados defeated the Comets 5-4.
Concordia Texas has now won six of their last seven matches and will next travel to Brownwood, Texas to face Howard Payne on Saturday at 1 p.m.
