AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas softball team would take an early lead in both games of Friday's doubleheader against Belhaven, but come up short in heartbreaking losses.
In game one,
Summer Harper would go 2-for-3 from the plate but it was not enough, falling 5-2 to the Blazers.
Concordia Texas would strike first, pushing across a run in the second. Harper opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on
Mycahla Howard's sac bunt. After a Belhaven error moved the runner to third, Hallmark would give the Tornados a 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice.
The Blazers would tie it up with a run in the fourth though and go on to take a 5-1 lead after scoring four runs in the fifth.
In the sixth, CTX would respond, scoring a run on two hits.
Payton Walker led off with a double to right and be pinch-ran for by
Emma Martino. She would steal third and come home on a Blazers' throwing error to cut it to 5-2.
Looking for a comeback in the seventh,
Haley Dennett would reach on a two-out single, but it was not for CTX, falling to Belhaven in game one.
In game two of the day, the Tornados would grab an early lead, but fall late to the Blazers 4-3.
In the first, Dennett led off the frame with a single. After a sac bunt and a wild pitch, Dennett would reach third and score the game's opening run on
Anissa Garcia's single to left.
Belhaven would knot it up at one-all with a run in the fourth.
In the bottom half of the inning, CTX countered with two runs to retake the lead.
With two runners on and two away,
Kayla Patton would smack a double over the center fielder's head, bringing home
Taylor Smith and
Lulu Arroyo and give the Tornados a 3-1 lead.
The Blazers would score three runs in the fifth though and hold on to their lead, defeating CTX 4-3.
Next, the Tornados will head to Pineville, La., for a three-game series with Louisiana College beginning on April 18 with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
