AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's tennis team took an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, but could not hold on as they fell 6-3 on Friday against Hardin-Simmons at Marvin D. Henderson Tennis Courts.
With the loss, the Tornados dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in American Southwest Conference play on the season.
The combinations of
Kaitlin Stevens and
Alexis Popovich along with
Camille Kempf and
Genna Ellinwood gave CTX an early edge with a pair of doubles victories. Playing on line two, Stevens and Popovich grabbed a thrilling 9-8 (7-4) win while Kempf and Ellinwood won their match 8-5 on line three.
Leading 2-1 heading into singles play, Popovich (6-6) gave the Tornados another victory while playing on line one in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-2. The senior out of Austin, Texas, picked up her third singles match win in her last four contests.
Playing on line two,
Leyla Martinez was locked in a close battle throughout. After taking the first set 6-3, Martinez dropped set two 7-6 before narrowly losing the third set 6-4 to drop the match 2-1.
