AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's tennis program earned their third straight trip to the American Southwest Tournament on Friday by grabbing a dominant 9-0 victory over Mary-Hardin Baylor at River Place Country Club.
Since tennis returned to CTX for the 2015-16 season, the Tornados have clinched a spot in the ASC Tournament in three of the four seasons in the recent history of the program.
The Tornados dominated the match from the opening serve, taking all three doubles matches. The combinations of
Claire Austin and
Leyla Martinez along with
Alexis Popovich and
Kaitlin Stevens both earned 8-1 victories on lines one and two, respectively.
Genna Ellinwood and
Camille Kempf, meanwhile, did not drop a game en route to an 8-0 victory.
Singles play continued the dominant effort for CTX, as all six players on the day earned straight set victories.
Playing on lines one, four and five, respectively, Popovich, Kempf and Ellinwood combined to drop just three total games on the day with scores of 6-0, 6-1; 6-0, 6-1; and 6-1, 6-0.
Leyla Martinez and
Claire Austin were both phenomenal as well, picking up wins on lines two and three of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1.
Alejandra Rueda also earned a victory while playing on line six in her first action on the court this spring. Playing on line six, Rueda picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory to complete the sweep for the Tornados.
With the win, the Tornados earn the number four seed in the West and will face off against number one seed ETBU in the first round of the ASC Tournament on Thursday, May 2.
