Tornados rally, secure spot in ASC championship match

LONGVIEW, Texas – Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Concordia Texas men's tennis team rallied, winning four matches in singles, clinched by Evan Pena Jr's victory at line five to defeat Hardin-Simmons 5-3 on Friday, securing a spot in the American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship match.

The Tornados would fall behind early to the Cowboys, falling at line one and two doubles before Adam Compton and Pena Jr. squeaked out a 9-8 win at line three, including a 7-2 winning decision in the tiebreaker.

In the singles matches, Esteban Arredondo would pull CTX even at two-all with a 6-4, 6-0 win at line three. Hoanh Le and Joshua Bode would both pull out 7-5 wins in their first set and went on to straight set wins at line three and two, respectively.

Hardin-Simmons would cut it to 4-3 after the Tornados fell at line four, but Pena Jr. would close out the match with a win at line five, taking the first set in a tiebreaker and earning a break point in set two to win it 6-4.

With the win, CTX advances to their ASC championship match, their first-ever appearance in the finals, where they will face the winner between UT Dallas and LeTourneau.

The championship match will be held in Longview, Texas on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Davis Tennis Courts.
