AUSTIN, Texas –
Mycahla Howard's single through the left side of the infield capped off a four-run seventh inning, completing the comeback as the Concordia Texas softball team rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Howard Payne 7-6 on a walk-off in their final game of the season on Saturday.
Entering the seventh, the Tornados trailed the Yellow Jackets 6-3 and only had three outs left in their season.
Playing in their final game as a Tornado, seniors
Emma Martino and
Haley Dennett would get the rally started. Martino led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a stolen base. Dennett would bring her home on an RBI single to center.
Payton Walker, another one of the team's seven seniors followed. She worked a walk, and
Lulu Arroyo made it a one-run game after an RBI single to left. One out later, senior
Olivia Kaase would tie the game up on an RBI ground out.
With two outs and runners at second and third, Howard, the senior out of Santa Fe, Texas, came to the plate. On a 1-1 pitch, she lined a single to the left side of the infield, scoring
Maddy Ellison to complete the comeback as CTX walked it off with a 7-6 win.
It was second time CTX came back from a three-run deficit in the game, trailing 3-0 after HPU's run in the third.
The Tornados scored two runs in the bottom of the third and a run in the fourth to tie it up at three-all. The Yellow Jackets, though, retook the lead with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth before CTX's late inning rally.
Dennett finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs, while Howard had two hits, a walk, and drove in the game-winning run.
Keeley Etchinson, who came in the third inning in relief, picked up the win, her third of the season.
The win closes out the 2019 season on a high note for the Tornados as they say goodbye to their seven seniors, Martino, Dennett, Howard, Kaase, Walker,
Taylor Smith and
Chloe Gonzales.
