SHERMAN, Texas – Newcomer
Kyndall Ellis registered double-doubles in back-to-back matches and the Concordia Texas volleyball team opened the season on a winning streak, defeating Centenary and Austin College in a doubleheader sweep to kick off the Austin College Classic on Friday.
The Tornados recorded double-digit kills in every single set between the two matches, rolling past the Ladies in straight sets followed by a four-set victory over the Roos in the nightcap.
In the first match, CTX had 14 kills compared to only two errors in a first-set win and never looked back, winning the match 25-17, 25-11 and 25-23.
The Tornados finished with 45 kills as a team for the match, led by returning All-American Southwest Conference First Team selection
Tristyn Massey, who finished with a team-high 11 kills.
Ellis, meanwhile, picked up 10 kills and a team-high 12 digs in the match, recording her first double-double as a member of the CTX program. Junior setter
Georgia Quiroz also had a double-double, tallying 17 assists along with 11 digs.
In the second match of the day, the Tornados faced tournament host Austin College. After dropping a tough 25-19 first set to the Roos, CTX regrouped and recovered, going on to win the next three sets 25-22, 25-13 and 25-14 to clinch their second victory of the tournament.
Ellis elevated her game in the second match of the day, tallying another double-double, She finish the match leading the team in kills and digs with 16 and 15, respectively.
Cassie Jackson, a transfer from UT Tyler, registered double-digit kills with 10, while sophomore
Brooke Keltgen had a strong defensive showing, recording a career-high 14 digs for the match.
The Tornados, down already a set, went back-and-forth with Austin College in the second set, before winning four of the final five points capped off by one of Massey's four service aces to even the sets at one a piece.
Concordia Texas never looked back in the final two sets, opening the third set on a 14-5 run to take a commanding 2-1 lead and followed with only one error in the final set compared to 13 kills to win their second match of the day.
The Tornados close out the Austin College Classic on Saturday when they play in another doubleheader in Sherman, Texas, playing Paul Quinn at 1 p.m. followed by a matchup against St. Thomas (TX) at 3 p.m.
