Tornados come up short against Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. – Kaycie Dunkerley and Payton Berger combined for 40 points, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball team came up short on the road against Belhaven 88-80 on Saturday inside the Heidelberg Gymnasium.

Ten different Tornados recorded a point for CTX, powered by the duo of Dunkerley and Berger, who combined to shoot 12-of-25 from the floor. Dunkerley knocked down four 3-pointers for the second straight game, finishing with a season high 22 points, while Berger added 18 points and six rebounds.

In the opening quarter, the Tornados took an early four-point advantage after a LeAnn Stephens free throw midway through the period. The Blazers closed the deficit to two at the end of the first as CTX led 20-18.

In the following frame, Belhaven opened on a 7-0 run to retake the lead after a fast break layup from Sydney Martin. Dunkerley, meanwhile, found a rhythm, shooting 4-of-6 in the quarter for 11 points. The Tornados pulled within one in the period, but headed to locker room trailing the Blazers 42-39.

In the third, CTX shot 53 percent from the floor, scoring a team-high 26 points, including seven from Berger and six from Kennedy Donovan. The quarter experienced two lead changes and eight ties, but the Tornados trailed 66-65 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Natalie Velardez's layup tied the game at 72-all with 8:07 to go. Belhaven, though, responded with a 13-3 run to take a double-digit lead late in the period. Dunkerley and Berger each had five points in the quarter, but CTX was unable to complete a comeback, falling 88-80.

Velardez finished the game with eight points and a career-high nine rebounds, while Madi Maxwell nearly had a double-double, pulling down a career-high 10 boards along with seven points.

Next, the Tornados will return home for a two-game home stand, facing McMurry on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
