AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's basketball team nearly rallied from a double-digit deficit, but fell short to No. 14 Mary Hardin-Baylor 62-48 on Saturday inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Tornados struggled offensively throughout the day, shooting 30 percent from the field, but were tenacious on defense, forcing 24 Cru turnovers and finishing with 15 steals as a team.
After falling behind by as much as 13 points in the first half, CTX closed out the second quarter on a high note, heading to the locker room on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 31-24.
Madi Maxwell powered the offense in the first half, producing eight of her 10 points in the half.
In the second half, UMHB pushed their lead back to double digits after Brooke Elliot's layup made it 38-28 with 7:03 to go in the period. The Tornados did not go down without a fight though, reeling off eight straight points and pulled within two after
Kennedy Donovan knocked down a free throw.
Concordia Texas outscored the Cru 18-14 in the quarter and headed to the final frame within striking distance, trailing 45-42.
In the final quarter, the Tornados' shooting touch went cold though, finishing 2-of-14 from the floor and were unable to complete the comeback, falling to UMHB 62-48.
Natalie Velardez finished with a team-high 11 points, including a 4-of-4 mark at the charity stripe, while
Payton Berger recorded eight points and seven rebounds on the day.
Kaycie Dunkerley finished with only two points, but grabbed seven rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
Next, CTX will head back out on the road, traveling to Abilene, Texas, where they will face Hardin-Simmons on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
