Gonzalez’s performance leads Tornados past Hardin-Simmons for fourth straight win

ABILENE, Texas – Luis Gonzalez shot 12-of-16 from the charity stripe and produced a game-high 26 points to guide the Concordia Texas men's basketball team past Hardin-Simmons 81-68 on Thursday inside the Mabee Complex for the team's fourth win in a row.

The Tornados shot 46 percent from the field and made a living at the free throw line, where they knocked down 21-of-31 as a team. Defensively, CTX harassed the Cowboys throughout the night, forcing 16 turnovers, which led to 27 points for the Tornados.

In the first half, CTX's only lead came after Philip Meikle's jumper to open the scoring as HSU folllowed with a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the half at 12-4.

Gonzalez scored 14 points in the half but the Tornados were never able retake the lead and headed to the locker room trailing 35-30 at halftime.

In the second half, CTX slowly cut into the deficit and retook the lead at the 14:15 mark after Ronnie Hamilton knocked down his lone 3-pointer to make it 48-46.

The teams would go back and forth in the period as seven lead changes and six ties occurred.

The Tornados began to find their offensive stroke though, shooting 55 percent from the field in the second half alone.

Tied at 66-all with 6:06 to play, CTX closed out the game with a 15-2 run to put away the Cowboys 81-68 and record their fourth straight win.

Trevon Hester and Zaid Harris were influential in the Tornados' second half comeback, scoring 12 points and eight points in the second period alone, respectively. Gonzalo Munoz, meanwhile, continued to be a force on the boards, pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds along with seven points.

Philip Meikle, who dealt with foul trouble throughout the night, finished with nine points, inching closer to 1000 points for his career. He now is only 41 points from the historic milestone.

Next, CTX will remain in Abilene, Texas and go for their fifth consecutive win when they face McMurry on Saturday at 3 p.m.
