MARSHALL, Texas –
Luis Gonzalez scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team fell short against East Texas Baptist 83-70 on Saturday.
The Tornados struggled offensively throughout the day, shooting only 40 percent from the field and were unable to find their stroke from behind the arc, making only four 3-pointers as a team.
In the first half, it was a trio of CTX players to lead the charge, as Gonzalez along with
Trevon Hester and
Philip Meikle each had seven or more points in the half.
Trailing by as much as nine points in the first half, the Tornados reeled off eight straight points to cut the margin to 28-27 with 2:34 left after
Antoine Henderson's layup followed by Gonzalez splitting a pair of free throws.
The Tigers responded with an 11-4 run though and took a 39-31 advantage into halftime.
In the second half,
Jordan Berry's 3-pointer at the 17:02 mark brought the CTX within three, but it was close as the Tornados would cut it to as they fell 83-70.
Gonzalez finished the day with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds in the loss, while Berry and Hester added 10 points each.
Meikle, meanwhile, shot 6-of-8 from the free throw line, but dealt with foul trouble throughout the game, finishing with 14 points.
Concordia Texas will return to the court on Thursday, traveling to Alpine, Texas for a showdown against the top team in the west division, Sul Ross State, at 7:30 p.m.
