Tornados stage late rally, but fall short to No. 18 UT Dallas in ASC Tournament quarterfinals

RICHARDSON, Texas – Madi Maxwell and Kaycie Dunkerley each produced 13 points and the Concordia Texas women's basketball team pulled within two late in the second half but were unable to take a lead, falling to No. 18 UT Dallas 65-50 in the quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Thursday.

The Tornados, who had trailed by as much as 14 points midway through the third quarter, enter the final period trailing the Comets 45-36.

In the final quarter, CTX opened with a 9-2 run and cut the deficit to 47-45 after a Maxwell jumper. The Comets responded with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, but Dunkerley, the newest conference record holder for treys in a career, hit right back with a 3-pointer of her own to whittle the deficit back to a one-possession game.

UT Dallas, though, closed out the game on a 15-2 run and never looked back as the Tornados fell 65-50, ending their season.

Maxwell finished with 13 points, 10 of them in the first half, to lead CTX offensively, along with five rebounds. Dunkerley, meanwhile, in her final collegiate game, scored six of her 13 points in the final quarter to pull the Tornados within two late.

Havyn Perez added nine points and four rebounds, while Natalie Velardez had six points and five boards in the loss.

Concordia Texas' season ends in the ASC Tournament Quarterfinals in a year where they returned to the conference tourney for the first time since 2018.

The program will say goodbye to their four seniors, Dunkerley, Payton Berger, Alyssa Marquez and LeeAnn Stephens, but return in the 2020-21 season with all five starters and three other returners.
