AUSTIN, Texas – Tied at 4-all and facing match point,
Evan Pena Jr. rallied from a set down and came from behind at line six singles, winning the decisive third set 7-5, to clinch the 5-4 victory for the Concordia Texas men's tennis team over LeTourneau on Friday at the River Place Country Club.
Pena Jr., a sophomore out of Rio Grande City, Texas, dropped the first set 6-2 to the YellowJackets' Miles Grubbs. He bounced back in the following set, fending off match point and forcing a third set with a 7-5 win. In the decisive third set, both players went back and forth before being knotted up at 5-all. Pena Jr. won the next two games to grab the set and the match.
In the earlier matches, the Tornados fell behind after dropping two of the three doubles matches.
Jorge Garcia and
Esteban Arredondo, playing at line three, salvaged a point for CTX, defeating LETU's Nathan Schmidt and Rodrigo Vazquez 8-3.
In singles, the Tornados chipped away, picking up wins at lines one, three and five before Pena Jr's epic comeback at line six.
Robin Van der Heijden took care of business at line one, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Michael Davis, meanwhile, outlasted the YellowJackets' Julian Lee with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at line three.
Riley O'Connor followed with a straight set win at line five to set up the CTX's comeback.
Next, the Tornados will host East Texas Baptist on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference matchup at the River Place Country Club in Austin, Texas.
