Tornados fall to Southwestern in doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas softball team continued its nine-game home stand, hosting Southwestern in a doubleheader on Tuesday, but came up short to the Pirates, falling in both games.

In game one, Simone Langland allowed only three runs over seven innings of work, but the Tornados' bats produced only three hits in a losing effort, falling 3-0.

Southwestern struck first, pushing across a run in the opening inning before Langland induced a fly out and a pop out to end the threat.

Despite having only three hits in the game, CTX had multiple scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize, leaving nine runners on base.

In the fifth inning, trailing 2-0, the Tornados loaded the bases on three hit batters, bringing up Summer Harper with two outs, but a ground out ended the inning.

In the following frame, Kirstie Soto and Ashley Soto each had two-out singles, looking to begin a comeback, but the inning ended on a ground out as CTX went on to drop the first game of the night.

In the second game, the Tornados scored four runs in the first two innings, but were unable to stop the Pirates' bats as they racked up 18 hits for the game and CTX fell 14-5.

Lauren Varesic recorded three strikeouts in the first inning and the Tornados produced three runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks an RBI single by Cristina Ayala and a two-run double from Katie Hoke and held a 3-0 advantage.

Southwestern tied the game up though in the following inning, scoring three runs on four hits.

Concordia Texas retook the lead in the bottom of the second as Anissa Garcia came around to score after a Pirates throwing error on Ashley Hallmark's single.

The Tornados were unable to keep up with Southwestern though as they scored 11 runs over the final four innings, taking a double-digit lead at 14-4.

Danielle Diaz smacked an RBI double down the left field line to score Ayala in the seventh inning, but it was not enough as CTX fell short in the final game of the night.

The Tornados will return to the field on Friday, hosting No. 4 East Texas Baptist in a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Tornado Softball Field.
