Tornados come up short on the road

SEGUIN, Texas – Kennedy Donovan and Natalie Velardez both turned in double-digit scoring, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball team fell short on the road, losing 84-41 at Texas Lutheran on Saturday.

Donovan posted 10 points on an efficient 3-for-4 from the field, and Velardez scored 10 points to go along with five boards.

In the first quarter, Madi Maxwell began the game with a made jumper, giving CTX a 2-0 lead, and a three-pointer from Velardez made it 5-2 in favor of the Tornados with 7:59 remaining in the period. However, the Bulldogs recovered, outscoring the Tornados for the remainder of the quarter, and CTX trailed 22-14 after the opening period.

The Tornados' offense struggled to get going in the second quarter until Donovan drilled a shot from deep, cutting the TLU lead to 39-17 with 2:59 remaining in the half. Chelsea Cogborn followed with a jumper, and Donovan finished a tough play at the rim, bringing the score to 43-21 at the halfway point.

Donovan scored five of her 10 points in the third quarter, but the Tornados were unable to cut into the lead, ending the quarter in a 56-31 hole.

In the fourth quarter, a fastbreak bucket from Jessica Amezaga cut the lead to 57-33 with 9:08 to play, followed by a jumper from Velardez at the 6:57 mark to bring the score to 64-35. Maxwell and Hannah Kness added more points in the quarter, but the Tornados ultimately fell to the Bulldogs 84-41.

Maxwell recorded six points to go along with nine rebounds, and Erin Toro grabbed two rebounds and registered both a steal and a block on the defensive end.

The Tornados will look to get back on track as they return home on Tuesday, hosting Southwestern for the third bout between the teams this season at 7 pm in Concordia Fieldhouse.
