Tornados come up short, fall in ASC quarterfinals

BELTON, Texas – A trio of Tornados recorded double-doubles, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas volleyball team's season came to an end, falling 3-1 to LeTourneau on Thursday in the American Southwest Tournament quarterfinals.

The Tornados entered the conference tournament for the fifth year in a row, playing as the sixth seed against the three-seeded YellowJackets in the teams' third matchup of the season.

Concordia Texas staved off a sweep in the third set but was unable to force a decisive fifth set, falling in four 17-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 26-28.

In the opening set, Kylexus Block and Savannah Kari combined for 10 kills and the Tornados pulled even at 11-all after a Block kill. LeTourneau though, reeled off 12 of the next 16 points to take the lead and never looked back and won the first set.

In the following set, the YellowJackets jumped out to a 10-6 advantage and CTX was unable to recover, falling behind 2-0 in the match.

The Tornados rebounded in the third frame, led by the play of Block and Alyssa Legette, who had a near double-double in the set alone with 11 assists and seven digs.

The set ended with 11 ties and seven lead changes in a back-and-forth battle. Tied at 18-all, CTX closed out the set on a 7-2 run, capped off by a Jaya McCarty kill to make it 2-1 in the match.

McCarty finished the night with 12 kills, hitting at a .357 mark as well as three total blocks.

In the final set, a marathon, the Tornados registered 19 kills, including six from Nicole Deering, who finished the night with her first career double-double, tallying 14 kills and 12 digs.

Concordia Texas went toe-to-toe with the Yellow Jackets, tying it up five times after evening the game at 21-all on a LETU attack error. The Tornados fended off two match points, but were unable to retake the lead in the final frame, falling 3-1 in the match to end their season.

Block finished the match with a team-high 18 kills along with 19 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Legette, meanwhile, also had a double-double with 44 assists and a career-high 17 digs.

Concordia Texas' wraps up the season with a 10-15 record and earned their fifth ASC Tournament appearance aided by a seven-match win streak.

The program says goodbye to seniors Legette and Block, but will return with a wealth of talent including ASC First Team selection Sarah Ghormley.
